If you have chronic pain, live with an illness or are otherwise in need of medical recommendation for your condition, you may be wondering how to get your medical card in Oklahoma. Here’s everything you need to know about the program and how to qualify, from what conditions qualify to how much it costs and more!

What is a medical recommendation card?

A medical recommendation card is a physical card that you can carry with you that proves that you have been seen by a doctor and recommended for the use of medical products legally. The card will have your name, photograph, and the doctor’s signature.

In order to get a medical recommendation card, you must first be seen by a licensed physician who will then fill out an application for you. Once this is complete, you will submit it to the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) for approval.

You are also required to pay a $25 fee every year. After all necessary information has been submitted, the OSDH will review the application and make their decision within 15 days. If approved, they will mail you your official identification card along with other materials so that you may apply at dispensaries across Oklahoma.

Who can apply for a medical recommendation card?

You must be a resident of Oklahoma and have a valid form of identification. You will need to fill out an application, which you can get from the Oklahoma Department of Health. You will also need to provide proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill.

After you submit your application, you will be contacted for an appointment. At this time, you will meet with a board-certified physician who is authorized by the state to recommend MMJ. They will examine you before issuing your card so that they can determine if it would be helpful for your condition.

If you qualify, then they will give you your ID card and tell you how to use it at dispensaries. A qualifying patient may designate his/her primary caregiver who shall assist him/her with obtaining any medicine prescribed pursuant to this act.

The person designated as primary caregiver shall not be related within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity, nor live in the same household as the qualifying patient.

Use of MMJ during pregnancy

It’s generally not recommended to use it during pregnancy, as it can potentially cross the placenta and affect the developing fetus. Additionally, smoking it can increase the risk of preterm labor and low birth weight.

However, some women do choose to use it during pregnancy, either for medical reasons or to manage morning sickness. If you do decide to use it during pregnancy, be sure to consult with your doctor first and always purchase from a reputable source.

Those who are breastfeeding should avoid using it, as THC can pass through breast milk to the infant. Some also recommend taking an herbal supplement called Cannabinoid-Syndrome Prevention (CSP) which is made up of coconut oil infused with cannabidiol and terpenes found in hemp plants.

The goal of CSP is to help reduce any possible side effects that could come with its use while pregnant.

Ways MMJ helps with common ailments

  •       It has been shown to be effective in treating pain, both chronic and acute.
  •       It can help reduce inflammation throughout the body, which can relieve pain and other symptoms associated with conditions like arthritis and Crohn’s disease.
  •       It has also been shown to be effective in treating anxiety and depression, two common mental health conditions that often go hand-in-hand with chronic pain.
  •       It is a natural appetite stimulant that is known to improve sleep patterns as well as alleviate nausea.
  •       All of these reasons make it clear why so many people are turning to MMJ for relief when traditional methods of treatment fail them.
